All true, but in the end I felt a profoundly empty depression? This one didn't get me like it gets others, I don't know. Just seemed sour. I agree with your well-made points but maybe I just wanted more from this.
Yeah it's certainly not a feel-good film by any stretch. It's interesting that you say it didn't get you like it gets others; in what specific way, if any, do you think it's getting to others?
There's a lot of general enthusiasm for the movie, as of people are excited about it. But there was nothing all that uplifting about it, nothing exciting. I hated Anora as a person and her new hubby was an irritant. Maybe ten minutes into the movie, I was just like, "nuke these people" and my opinion only softened a little as the movie went on.
Also, they could have easily have gotten this movie in at 110 mins. That length is unacceptable.
Oh yeah I know the general enthusiasm is high; I meant if there was any specific reason for that enthusiasm that you noticed; I certainly couldn't find one.
I think it's interesting that the film sets Anora up in a way where we're supposed to dislike her, and so we gain a sort of perverted satisfaction when her Bad Decisions have Bad Consequences, but then through Igor, we have a means of cheering for Anora against her own bullshit, even if we don't jump at the chance to do so. You could say something similar about Vanya, except we never want him to win so much as we glean satisfaction from him purely as the means with which Anora gets comeuppance for her Bad Decisions.
That all makes for a fascinating thesis regarding social power and power in general. I could see that being the draw of the film, even if so many of its proponents aren't consciously aware of it.
