Great read Charlotte! LNWTD was pretty pitch perfect until losing its way in the third act a bit. But that was Longlegs for me as well. David Dastmalchian is so good in this and the fact that he wasn’t nominated for Best Actor just further shows how disappointing the Oscars are. If he had the same level performance as this troubled tv host but say in something like A Complete Unknown, for example, he may have been heralded as a revelation worthy of awards. But instead we get another Bob Dylan impersonation over the complex nuances that DD is accomplishing in Late Night (sigh). :)
Yeah the casting of Dastmalchian alone played into the character so well; who better to stand in as the everyman of the masses than the guy who's been in every superhero franchise under the sun?
And my god, the guy's so good at inhabiting sinister spaces. You can always believe he's the good guy even if he's the bad guy, and vice versa. Also a huge asset in LNWTD specifically.
100%…between this and Wolfman I’m really enjoying your thoughtful takes and hope you cover more horror movies this year. Have you written on The Monkey yet and I missed it somehow?
You just persuaded me to watch this! I was on the fence as I'm not a huuuuuge fan of the genre overall but I'm sold. 🫡
Now this is the kind of film analysis I'm here for. Great stuff.

Ahh, thanks Charlotte!

I reviewed The Monkey for work! I'll be putting it in a Jan-Feb work review roundup soonish, but here's a link to that one: https://wegotthiscovered.com/reviews/review-the-monkey-is-both-the-most-sick-and-twisted-and-healthily-well-adjusted-film-we-may-get-all-year/
Thanks for sharing this one. Will definitely need to check it out.
